Ar & Dee, the design collaboration between Rob Herschenfeld and Chris Rucker is the culmination of a decade of joint work on projects of all scales across many disciplines. Adapting to a changing New York City, which has pushed out smaller design-build firms, the two have worked toward their shared vision of an environment that fosters design, craftsmanship and apprentice-style training. Recognizing the lack of skilled designers with a firm knowledge of manufacturing techniques and a shrinking pool of high-level fabricators in traditional woodwork, cabinetry, welding and machining, they took it all under one roof to encourage cross-disciplinary dialog and training focused on the progress of individual craftsmen. Seeking out challenges and forging ahead in search of solutions is what defines Ar & Dee. With a combined forty years of design, engineering and practical building experience, the two feel there is no project beyond their capabilities. With a belief that no detail is too small to warrant attention and nothing is beyond the scope of their endeavor, they have taken on multidisciplinary projects across the spectrum from one-off furniture pieces, to fully designed and appointed private residences, to industrial production facilities. If it can be built, Ar & Dee can build it better, more thoughtfully, more comfortably and more beautifully.
Rob was born and raised in the Bronx. Upon returning to New York after obtaining his degree in physics from MIT, his graduate work in mechanical engineering at UC Berkley, and a couple of years apprenticing and then working as a furniture maker for Hank Gilpin in Lincoln, RI, he chose Brooklyn as home. Opening the doors of Rob Herschenfeld Design Inc. in 1993, he has spent the last two decades building a shop and crew capable of tackling the most challenging and varied projects and preserving the traditions of hand work and flexible manufacturing through apprentice style training of both designers and fabricators. He resides with his family in Brooklyn.
